Adobe has announced its latest updates to its professional video tools, including After Effects and Premiere Pro, rolling out a global overhaul of their user interfaces designed to work better with high-DPI displays.
The company has switched back to version numbering its Creative Cloud releases, so the new versions are either CC 2014.1 or CC 13.1, depending on where you look. The updates were announced in time for IBC 2014.

New UI optimised for Retina displays and Surface Pro tablets
The main feature in After Effects CC 2014.1 is the new interface: designed to scale both content and UI items to the appropriate resolution for HiDPI devices like Apple Retina displays or Microsoft's Surface Pro.
According to product manager Steve Forde, the new UI is also designed to 'reduce the visual clutter that often comes with a 20-plus-year-old product', and is 'just the first step with all our applications'.
Updated Cinema 4D workflow
Cinema 4D Lite, the cut-down version of Cinema 4D bundled with After Effects, has been updated to R16 – although quite what that brings users is still a moot point.
Adobe specifically namechecks the new Reflectance channel, but so far the comparison table on Maxon's website doesn't seem to have been updated to show what other features of R16 the new Lite version includes.
However, After Effects' Collect Files command now works with assets associated with C4D files, so it should collect your textures automatically.
The Cineware plugin, which links the two apps, has also been upgraded, improving workflow when working with layers, and enabling region of interest rendering to work properly. You can see the new features in this video.
Native support for GoPro footage, other minor updates
Other than that, there are a number of smaller changes, listed in full on Adobe's blog, including a new Copy With Relative Property Links command, and better colour management when working with Dynamic Link.
After Effects CC 2014.1 can also now read and write GoPro's CineForm Intermediate codec natively.
The original teaser video for Premiere Pro CC 2014. The 2014.1 release builds on the masking and tracking tools it introduced, and adds new search, media browsing and transcoding workflows.
Premiere Pro gets new search, media browsing and transcoding workflows
For our money, the new features in Premiere Pro are bigger: as well as the new UI, Premiere Pro CC 2014.1 introduces advanced search and project browsing workflows, and new transcoding and test rendering options.
Of the former, the new Search Bins enable editors to build new bins automatically based on metadata searches within a project, with results showing as aliases of the original project items, while Timeline Search finds and selects clips within a sequence based on criteria like clip name or marker comments.
Users can also now have Media Browser panels for multiple Premiere Pro or After Effects projects open simultaneously, while the new Source Monitor Timeline View can preview sequences from those projects.
The new Consolidate and Transcode option converts sequences or an entire project into a single codec, while retaining the ability to make edit adjustments later, and leaving original projects untouched.
And Render and Replace enables quick timeline renders of clips and dynamically linked After Effects compositions – again with the ability to return to the original media or comp at any time.
Expanded format support, improved masking and tracking
Like After Effects, Premiere Pro CC 2014.1 gets native support for the GoPro CineForm codec, along with the AJA RAW format from the new CION camera, plus GPU debayering for Phantom Cine and Canon RAW footage.
The masking and tracking functionality introduced in the original 2014 release has also been updated. Adobe acrobat reader dc windows 8 1 64 bit.
New features include a free-draw polygon pen tool, and better on-screen Bezier adjustments, with feathering and expansion now accessible directly from the monitor.
And again, there are also a number of smaller improvements, set out in this blog post.

The other tools in Adobe's pro video line-up, including SpeedGrade, Prelude, Media Encoder, Audition and Story Plus, have also been updated, as has the Adobe Anywhere collaborative video editing platform.
You can read summaries of their new features on Adobe's blog.
Updated 9 September: The 2014.1 releases are now available. Maxon has also issued a press release that summarises the changes in Cineware 2.0.

Forget the Creative Suite. Adobe's first major Creative Cloud update proves that going all-in on subscriptions was the right decision.
Today Adobe announced the launch of Creative Cloud 2014, an all-encompassing release featuring 14 updated Creative Cloud desktop apps; three new mobile apps — Photoshop Mix, Adobe Sketch, and Adobe Line; the company's first foray into hardware; significant changes to Adobe's syncing and storage offerings; and an impressively low $10 per month tier for photographers.
Although Adobe calls this update 'the biggest' software release since Creative Suite version 6, we don't agree. No single preexisting app or service in Adobe's Creative Cloud will shock you with a dramatic redesign. Instead, as you'll find below, Adobe focused on subtle refinements across the board, and — in some cases — great new functionality that won't rattle the overall experience.
Photoshop
Following last year's redesign and feature overhaul, Adobe's updates to Photoshop CC 2014 target just a few things: Microsoft Windows, Typography, and Blur. Free online bar games.
Adobe launched HiDPI (or Retina) support on Macs last year after sales of Apple's Retina MacBook Pros drove demand. Now, as Windows machines catch up, Adobe aims to support high-resolution screens on every device.
As teased at Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 launch event, Adobe has also introduced new support in Photoshop for pinch and zoom on images. Adobe also claims that Surface Pro 3 users will be able to 'create smoother strokes' and will notice a 'more responsive experience.'
Photoshop CC 2014 additionally features in-document instant previews for typefaces. For designers, this is a huge change: Now users of the app can highlight text and browse different typeface options while simultaneously previewing the changes within a document. It's kind of like a WYSIWYG editor.
Other noteworthy changes in Photoshop CC 2014 include new blur gallery filters, path blur filters, more easily updated layer comps, subtle changes to content-aware fill, and a new color panel. Screenshot button windows 10.

Illustrator & InDesign
Although both Illustrator CC 2014 and InDesign CC 2014 pack numerous updates, the changes below aren't nearly as noticeable as Adobe's updates to Photoshop.
Rel. 2015.3.1
Adobe shares that 'new capabilities in Illustrator CC include Live Shapes to quickly transform rectangles into complex shapes and then return to the original rectangle with just a few clicks, as well as faster rendering of vector graphics with GPU acceleration on Windows with an Adobe-certified NVIDIA graphics card.'
And in InDesign, Adobe now enables layout designers to 'select table rows and columns and use EPUB Fixed Layout to easily create digital books.'
Web Design: Muse, Dreamweaver, Edge Animate, & Flash
Muse is one of three Web design tools built by Adobe, alongside Edge and Dreamweaver. For clarity, here's an easy way to tell the three apart: Muse was built for designers, Edge was built for developers, and Dreamweaver was built for both.
Adobe shares that Muse CC 'now includes 64-bit support, HiDPI display support for sharper-looking images, objects, and text, and the ability to preview and optimize desktop, smartphone, and tablet versions of your sites before going live.'
Dreamweaver includes minor updates, including improvements to the app's CSS Designer feature. Edge Animate (part of the larger 'Edge' Web design family) now enables users to import 'HTML5-friendly' videos, and Flash now enables users to export Flash frames as SVG files.
Video Editing: After Effects, Premiere Pro, Audition, & SpeedGrade
Adobe shares that Premiere Pro CC 2014 now features enhanced graphics performance. After Effects now includes 'precise new keying effects,' and SpeedGrade CC 2014 features 'more flexible Direct Link color pipeline,' the company says.
Mobile Apps & Hardware
The future of software giant Adobe lies in extensive cloud integration, a new subscription pricing model, and … a stylus and digital ruler for the iPad.
Formerly known by their code names 'Project Mighty' and 'Napoleon,' Adobe's new Ink and Slide iPad accessories ($200) are the company's first-ever hardware products. And they're yet another sign that Adobe is changing with the times.
Head here for a deep dive into Adobe's new mobile apps and hardware.

Closer to the Cloud
When Adobe killed off its beloved Creative Suite last year for a subscription-based offering, the company did everything in its power to calm users on the edge of revolt. Like a game of Janga, one too many missteps could have toppled segments of Adobe's creative empire. The death of Fireworks made the situation all the more dire.
But Creative Cloud held together, grew gradually, and is now far closer to becoming the service it was always meant to be. Before, Adobe's cloud-based storage offering couldn't compare to Dropbox, and some of the company's most exciting features — like type syncing — took months to launch.
Now with 2.3 million Creative Cloud subscribers, a newly refined suite of mobile and desktop apps, and intriguing connected hardware offerings, Adobe can finally declare Creative Cloud a success.
